What is the best wood to make a chess board?
My favorite wood combination for a chess board is Padauk and Maple. With this combination most all the chess piece woods will look good. Of course Ebonized/Black, Rosewood, Sheesham and even Walnut for the dark pieces will work with the Padauk.
What is Ebonised boxwood?
Ebonized chess pieces refers to the process of staining the boxwood pieces of one side black. The same wood type, boxwood, is used for both light and dark pieces, yet one is dark due to the staining process.
Why are chess pieces made of boxwood?
Ebonised Boxwood is a stained version of Boxwood. Because Boxwood is cheaper than Ebony it is used as an alternative to real Ebony. It is commonly used to make chess pieces, the black side obviously; a very convincing attempt at producing an Ebony effect. Makes for attractive deep black chess pieces.
How do you make a chess clay?
Form eight balls out of black clay that are 1/2 inch thick and cut them each in half. Press the flat side of each half-ball of clay onto the top of each disk and smooth the edges together to hide any seams between the disks and half-balls. Do the same for the white disks, only with white half-balls.

How do you build a chess board frame?
I wanted to keep the frame simple and build it onto the chess board. I used 1 x 3 pine lumber, cut them to size, sanded them and then stained them. To install the frame pieces, I applied some wood glue along the edge of the chess board and then brad nailed the frame piece in place.
How much space do you leave for pieces on a chess board?
For the height, I wanted to leave more than enough room for the pieces so the board wouldn’t look crowded. 31 inches seemed about right. Dividing that by the 8 spaces on a chess board gives 3 7/8 inches.
Can you make a chess board out of metal?
