Are L29 heads good?

Are L29 heads good?

Actually the L29 is a pretty good head for low rpm. I have been an engine builder for many years and understand head technology. When Gm went to the 8.1 LS cathedral port head for a few reasons and none of them real good. The L29 is the best of both worlds. It is much better than the Peanut port head it replaced.

What CC are stock Vortec heads?

These large chamber heads shrouded the valves even more than the older 64-cc chambers and did nothing to improve airflow. Not so ironically, the Vortec returned to a 64-cc chamber mainly because the current trend for all engines is with smaller, tighter chambers to improve both flow and chamber activity.

How much horsepower can you make with Vortec heads?

Most of these small block Chevy heads offer a power increase of around 40 hp, and even the iron Vortec heads were worth 20 hp over stock. The two best small block Chevy heads in terms of peak horsepower were worth more than 60 hp.

What size are Vortec heads?

Both GM factory and Chevrolet Performance Parts’ Vortecs come with 1.94-inch intake/1.50-inch exhaust valves. According to the engineers at GM, “Stepping them up to 2.02-inch valves doesn’t help them any, so it’s not recommended.

Can I put Vortec heads on a 350 TBI block?

The heads will bolt to the block fine but you will need a specific intake manifold. Either the gm TBI/vortec intake or a vortec intake for carbs and use an adapter for the tbi. If you use the carb intake you will loose the EGR. You can keep it with the gm intake.

What headers fit Vortec heads?

standard sbc headers work fine on vortec heads.

Will a TBI intake bolt to Vortec heads?

You will need a new intake manifold to bolt to the Vortec heads, something like the GM Performance 12496821 intake manifold, designed for just this purpose, as the Vortec heads only have eight holes to bolt the intake to the heads.

What kind of compression does a Chevy L29 have?

The heads used on the L29 combined the large oval intake ports with small (100 cc) combustion chambers to produce a slightly higher (than the Gen V) 9.0:1 compression. The compression was plenty low for use with the blower, but the extra power it provided would eventually be multiplied by the boost.

How much power do L-29 heads add?

The L-29 heads were good for something like 25 horsepower and 35 ft. lbs of torque over the old peanut-port heads. Also, they need reduced advance–anything more than 32 degrees total timing reduced power.

How much horsepower does a Vortech YSI motor put out?

Thanks to a maximum impeller speed of 65,000 rpm (racers go even higher) and a peak efficiency rating of 78%, the Vortech YSI was capable of supporting over 1,200 hp at 30 psi. The budget portion of the equation came from a 7.4L Gen VI big-block Chevy straight out of the local wrecking yard.

What kind of pulley does a Vortech engine have?

Vortech supplied a pulley combination that included an 80-tooth crank pulley and 32-tooth blower pulley which provided a drive ratio of 2.5:1. This combined with the internal step gearing and maximum engine speed of 6,000 rpm to produce a peak impeller speed of 51,700 rpm, well below the listed maximum of 65,000 rpm.
