Is the RD exam hard?
The exam can seem overwhelming, but let’s break it down. The RD exam is a grueling test that really tackles your critical thinking skills. I spent about a solid month studying for it, putting in a few hours each day. I know many people who had success studying for just 1-2 weeks, and some that needed more time.
How long does it take to study for the RD exam?
3-4 months
Due to the amount of material on the exam, we recommended a solid 3-4 months of preparation before taking the exam. If you can, it is best to study in the last few months of your internship, and then really go HARD for about a month after you complete your internship.
How do I start studying for RD exam?
To start, there are three crucial study materials every hopeful RD will need:
- Practice questions. They help provide a feel for the language that will be used on the exam.
- Podcasts. Chomping Down the Dietetics Exam Podcast is my other recommended resource for studying.
- Textbooks.
How many questions do you need to get right on the RD exam?
In order to receive a passing or a failing score report, the examinee must complete between 125–145 questions. During the examination, if the examinee does not respond to the minimum of 125 questions (for whatever reason), he/she will receive a failing score report.
Who writes the RD exam?
What Is the CDR Exam? To earn the RD credential, you must pass the exam sponsored by the CDR, which is the national credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The goal of the exam is to test applicants’ knowledge of nutrition and dietetics—a quality assurance measure of sorts.

How many hours a day should I study for the RD exam?

Try to incorporate 1-3 hours/day to study. At a minimum, take the exam 4 weeks out and study each domain for 1 week, with additional practice exams.

If the test ends at 125 questions, then most likely you have passed the exam. The maximum is 145.
What is a passing score on the RD exam?
25 or higher
A scaled score of 25 or higher is required to pass the exam. Because it is a scaled score the number of questions you must answer correctly varies slightly. When you pass the exam Pearson VUE sends you an email with information on how to maintain your RD credential.
Is the RD exam multiple choice?
The RD exam is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam comprised of 125-145 questions. The exam must be paid by credit card and is administered through Pearson Vue. To be eligible to sit for the RD exam, there are a few avenues.
How many times can you fail the RD exam?
It doesn’t matter what kind of grades you got in your dietetic courses, one must be prepared to pass the elite RD exam! The test can be retaken no less than 45 days after the previous test and will cost another $200. There is no limit to how many times the test can be retaken.
Where do dietitians work?
Most dietitians work from consulting rooms within hospitals, clinics, doctors’ surgeries or other healthcare facilities. You could also be visiting patients on hospital wards or in their homes. They often work as part of a larger team of medical professionals.
