What if my Word catheter falls out?
Most Word catheters will fall out in one to two weeks, and a cure is usually achieved by then. If it falls out in a few days, it is probably best to replace the balloon for two to four weeks if the patient will tolerate it.
Can I remove my own Word catheter?
Most people are not aware of the catheter and in most cases it will drop out on its own within 2-4 weeks. If it has not fallen out by 3 weeks following the procedure please contact the Gynaecology Secretaries on 01803 654608 to arrange an appointment to have the catheter removed. This is a painless procedure.
Is there an alternative to Word catheter placement for Bartholin’s cysts?
An alternative to Word catheter placement is marsupialization of a Bartholin’s cyst ( Figure 4 ). This procedure should not be used when an abscess is present. 10 Marsupialization can be performed in the office or, if the cyst is deeply seated, in an outpatient surgical suite.
What is a Bartholin’s gland abscess or cyst?
There is a Bartholin’s gland at each side of the entrance to the vagina. These glands produce lubrication that enters the vagina through a small duct (tube) from each gland. If the duct becomes blocked the gland can fill with mucus and a cyst (a fluid-filled lump) can occur. An abscess can occur if the gland or cyst becomes infected.
How do you treat a Bartholin cyst?
CHAPTER 131 Bartholin’s Cyst and Abscess. Bartholin’s cysts and abscesses are best treated using a Word catheter to induce the formation of an epithelialized tract from the vulvar vestibule to the cyst. This allows continued functioning of the Bartholin’s gland, proper drainage, and minimal recurrence.
What is the recurrence rate of Bartholin’s cyst?
Bartholin’s cysts and abscesses are best treated using a Word catheter to induce the formation of an epithelialized tract from the vulvar vestibule to the cyst. This allows continued functioning of the Bartholin’s gland, proper drainage, and minimal recurrence. The recurrence rate using this technique is between 2% and 15%.
