Gemzar (gemcitabine) is a chemotherapy drug used to treat certain types of malignant tumors, including some cases of ovarian cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and breast cancer.

Patients taking Abraxane/Gemzar survived 5.5 months before their disease progressed, compared to 3.7 months in patients who took Gemzar alone. The overall response rate (patients who experienced tumor shrinkage) was 23 percent for Abraxane/Gemzar compared with 7 percent for Gemzar alone.
What are the side effects of Gemzar chemo?
The following Gemzar side effects are common (occurring in more than 30%) for patients taking Gemzar:
- Flu-like symptoms (muscle pain, fever, headache, chills, fatigue)
- Fever (within 6-12 hours of first dose)
- Fatigue.
- Nausea (mild)
- Vomiting.
- Poor appetite.
- Skin rash.
- Low blood counts.

Does Gemzar cause weight gain?

How long can you take Gemzar?
Usually a cycle of gemcitabine is over 3 to 4 weeks (21 to 28 days). You usually have gemcitabine once a week for 2 or 3 weeks and then a week with no treatment. You have gemcitabine on its own or in combination with other cancer drugs.
