I have extended the IR receiver with standard stereo 3/5mm cables and it works fine. The IR emitters only use two wires and the 3.5mm plugs are slightly different (they only have two contact surfaces on the plug instead of 3). Some work and some do not. I recommend getting 3.5mm MONO cables to extend the IR emitters.
