What is the Poas Volcano known for?
Poás is one of Costa Rica´s most active volcanoes, and one of its most frequently visited and prominent ones. It contains a green acid crater lake and during some of its frequent phreatic eruptions, water from the lake is ejected like a geyser.

Is the Poas Volcano still active?
Poás is active, but don’t expect to see a full fledged eruption or even any lava flow here, the most recent period of violent eruptive activity ended in 1954. The last major activity was in 1910 when nearly a million tons of ash was ejected along with an immense column of smoke and steam.

Is Poas Volcano safe to visit? Following the volcano’s 2017 eruption and closure, the park has since reopened with new safety measures in place. The park now has gas sensors with live data to keep visitors safe from any toxic gases the volcanoes may be emitting as well as five safety shelters.

Poas Volcano National Park Observation Point Once you’re inside the park, follow the signs to the observation point. This trail is about 500 meters or so and takes about 10 minutes on a asphalted road. This path is also handicap friendly. Once you are the view point, you can walk around the platform to see the crater.
