What is acid-base compensation?
Compensation is the body’s attempt to bring the acid-base imbalance back to normal. When compensating an acid-base disturbance, the system not responsible for the imbalance attempts to bring the blood pH back to normal.
How do you calculate compensation in acid-base?
III. Calculation: Calculated PaCO2 in Metabolic Conditions
- Metabolic Acidosis with expected compensation. PaCO2 = 1.5 x HCO3 + 8 (+/- 2) PaCO2Delta = 1.2 x BicarbDelta. PaCO2 will not typically drop below 10 mmHg in respiratory compensation.
- Metabolic Alkalosis with expected compensation. PaCO2 = 0.7 x HCO3 + 20 (+/- 1.5)
How is acid base disorder treated?
In most patients with mild to moderate chloride-responsive metabolic alkalosis, providing an adequate amount of a chloride salt will restore acid-base balance to normal over a matter of days. In contrast, therapy of the chloride-resistant metabolic alkalosis is best directed at the underlying disease.
How does respiratory compensation work?
Respiratory compensation is the modulation by the brainstem respiratory centers, which involves altering alveolar ventilation to try and bring the plasma pH back to its normal value (7.4) in order to keep the acid-base balance in the body.
What is your total compensation?
The term total compensation is used to describe all forms of monetary payments to an employee. For existing employees, this can include both base pay as well as incentives. For newly-hired employees, the total compensation in the year hired may also include a sign-on bonus.
What is full compensation?
Full compensation. Payment for delivery of goods to one party by buying back more than 100 % of the value that was originally sold.
What is the regulation of acid base balance?
The renal regulation of the body’s acid-base balance addresses the metabolic component of the buffering system. Whereas the respiratory system (together with breathing centers in the brain) controls the blood levels of carbonic acid by controlling the exhalation of CO 2, the renal system controls the blood levels of bicarbonate.
How does acid base balance work?

What are the causes of acid base imbalance?
