Can you camp on any of the Boston Harbor Islands?
Camping is available on four different islands: Peddocks, Bumpkin, Grape and Lovells islands; and is accessible by private boat or ferry service only. Amenities are limited to composting toilets only, no showers, no supplies and access to fresh water is only available on Peddocks Island.
Can you camp on Spectacle island?
All campsites have charcoal grills nearby. Please remember all cooking supplies, including charcoal. Campers going to Grape, Bumpkin, and Lovells Islands should bring at least one gallon of drinking water per person for each day on-island. Only Peddocks, Georges, and Spectacle Islands have access to fresh water.
Can you camp on peddocks Island?
Peddocks Island Campground is open daily from late June through Labor Day Weekend. This coincides with ferry service to the island. If you leave from the Hingham Shipyard, you get free overnight parking.
Is George’s island Open?
Spectacle and Georges Islands will be open for visitation in the 2021 season. Click here to view ferry schedules. Thompson Island is closed to visitation, except for those participating in Outward Bound programming. Worlds End is open by advance reservation only.
Are there bathrooms on Spectacle Island?
Spectacle Island is the only park island that features an accessible 1.5-mile perimeter trail that meets ADA guidelines. All trails on the island are wide with low gradation and crushed-gravel substrate. Visitor Center, exhibits, and multi-stall restrooms are at ground level with no steps.
Can you swim on Spectacle Island?
Only Spectacle Island has a designated swimming beach with a lifeguard (late June through Labor Day weekend), and the area is not very big. It consists of a gravel beach, lifeguard stand, changing rooms, and outdoor rinse-off showers.
Is there a bathroom on Georges Island?
Two steps up to the washroom. Path from the wharf to the washroom area has a 1% slope, with another steeper slope up to the washrooms. Ground around the washrooms is uneven. Doorway width is 36 inches.
Can you swim at Georges Island?
There’s no swimming permitted at Georges Island. If you don’t mind that, you can easily spend at least three hours roaming through the fort and grounds.
Is Boston Harbor polluted?
Boston Harbor was once called the dirtiest water in America. Raw sewage, runoff of the streets, heavy metals, and excess nutrients were found in the waters. This caused all sorts of problems for the people of Boston’s health and safety.
