What is HLRCC?
Hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer (HLRCC) is a hereditary condition associated with the development of multiple leiomyomas (smooth muscle tumors) in the skin and uterus (fibroids) as well as an aggressive form of kidney cancer. HLRCC can look different in patient to patient, ranging from mild to severe.
How is HLRCC treated?
Uterine fibroids, in women with HLRCC, often eventually require surgical intervention including surgery designed to remove symptomatic fibroids and repair the damage to the uterus (myomectomy). In some cases, the surgical removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) may be necessary.
What is HLRCC cancer?
A rare, inherited disorder in which benign (not cancer) skin lesions called leiomyomas form in the smooth muscle tissue around the hair follicles. They usually form on the arms, legs, chest, and abdomen. Benign leiomyomas may also form as fibroids in the uterus in females.
Can leiomyomas be cancerous?
Can fibroids turn into cancer? Fibroids are almost always benign (not cancerous). Rarely (less than one in 1,000) a cancerous fibroid will occur. This is called leiomyosarcoma.
Are leiomyomas painful?
Pilar leiomyomas are the most common of the cutaneous types and the lesions are often multiple and painful. A burning or sharp, stabbing pain may occur spontaneously or can be provoked by touch/pressure and cold temperature.
How common are cutaneous leiomyomas?
Cutaneous leiomyomas represent 75% of all extra-uterine leiomyomas. Incidence is largely unrelated to race. The majority of solitary cutaneous leiomyomas occur in adulthood. Multiple piloleiomyomas typically occur between the ages of 10 and 30 years.
Can uterine cancer cause kidney problems?
It’s possible that cervical cancer can impact the kidneys, potentially leading to kidney failure. Kidney involvement typically occurs in the more advanced stages of cervical cancer. Kidney failure in cervical cancer can often be associated with blockage of the ureters, leading to hydronephrosis.
What is the malignant counterpart of leiomyoma?
Vascular leiomyosarcoma: the malignant counterpart of vascular leiomyoma. Cancer.
What causes leiomyoma?
It is not known what causes fibroids, but studies suggest genetics and prolonged exposure to estrogen may increase your risk of developing fibroids. Symptoms can include heavy and prolonged periods, bleeding between periods, pressure in the abdomen and pelvic pain.
Can leiomyoma be removed?
Myomectomy (my-o-MEK-tuh-me) is a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids — also called leiomyomas (lie-o-my-O-muhs). These common noncancerous growths appear in the uterus.
What is it like to have HLRCC?
HLRCC can be an overwhelming diagnosis because of the word cancer. Although most HLRCC patients never get kidney cancer, dealing with the potential of developing it can be difficult. Others on this site may have learned of their HLRCC diagnosis AFTER developing kidney cancer and are currently undergoing medical treatment.
Why is annual screening important for people with HLRCC?
In our attempt to protect ourselves and our family members, those of us diagnosed with HLRCC have learned the value of annual screening. If people with HLRCC are going to stay healthy, they have to understand the risks and take action to protect themselves.
Who should be screened for HLRCC?
The study is now seeing new people with HLRCC who have a kidney cyst or a solid tumor and also one new first person from a new family with HLRCC. Other people at risk in HLRCC families should be screened by their local medical centers. The Trial Number was NCT00055627 (now obsolete).
Should I get a genetic test for HLRCC?
If one of your parents is positive for HLRCC, it is very important that you obtain a genetic test for yourself, either through the study at the US-NIH or through a genetic counselor. Remember – there is a 50% chance that you are negative. You will not be able to advocate for yourself and your family until you know for certain if you have HLRCC.
