The way the TFI system works is pretty simple. There is a toothed wheel (the Shutter Wheel) mounted to the distributor shaft. The wheel has eight teeth (one for each cylinder), one of which is narrower than the other seven.

Use a voltmeter and look for pulsing with the engine running. The pulsing means the wire from the computer to the ignition control module is good and the computer is working. If it is working, the module is bad. If no pulsing is noted, check the third terminal down for pulses to the computer.

How to Test a Ford Ignition Coil
- Remove the negative battery cable from the battery with a wrench.
- Locate the coil on your Ford engine.
- Remove the large wire from the center of the coil by pulling it straight out of the coil.
- Place the test leads from the ohmmeter on the side terminals, one on each side.
