How do you make a wet felt hat?
Put the whole project into very hot water and then cold water until the water runs clear. Squeeze out any excess water and hit the project hard against a hard surface until it shrinks to the desired shape and size. Pour hot water over it, squeeze the water out and shape over a hat block or polystyrene head.
How much wool Do I need to wet felt a hat?
I recommend at least four layers of wool all over (more for a thicker hat). As in the photo below, you’ll probably have a woolly mess at first, but continue to add layers and needle felt all over the hat form surface until you compact the fibers into a smooth texture.

- Tape the cling film securely to the underneath of the block.
- Next, cover your chosen crown and either screw or attach to brim with sticky fixers.

Stuff the entire hat with tissue paper or a rolled up hand towel and set it aside in a cool, dry area. Or place it firmly on a wig or hat stand, ball, or round object to help reshape the crown. Check the hat after a day and keep in mind that the shaping process can take a few days.

As the steam hits the felt, the fibers will start to loosen, becoming more pliable and letting you reshape the material. Pull, bend, pinch or lightly stretch the felt to get rid of the wrinkles. Work through the hat until all wrinkled or folded areas have an even appearance.
