Is Handwired better than PCB?
It certainly appeals to our sense of craftsmanship to think that the human touch must always yield a better sound than machine-made circuits. But PCB-based amps, if carefully designed and built, can actually perform better than hand-wired amps.
What is a Handwired amp?
In a hand-wired amplifier, each component is soldered to the next manually. The opposite is an amp where all of the components are mounted on a printed circuit board.
What is PCB amp?
Properly designed, a printed circuit board can perform just as well as a point-to-point amp. In this amp construction method, a board is printed with copper, portions of which are etched off, leaving tracks that connect the components. The components are then soldered to pads at the ends of the tracks.
What is a point to point amp?
Point-to-point wiring – This means each component is directly hand-wired to the next. This is less common than one might think given how often it is used when describing the build of an amplifier. True point-ti-point creates a product that can be difficult to recreate over and over with any sort of accuracy.
Where is Mesa Boogie located?
Petaluma, California
Every MESA/Boogie, including all the cabinets, is entirely made in our one location here in Petaluma, California, where we’ve been since 1980.
What are the advantages of using PCB design in industry?
Advantages of PCB :
- PCBs has a low cost, mass production can be achieved at a lower cost.
- It is Re-workable.
- Widely available.
- Excellent shelf life.
- This board gives low electronics noise.
- Compact size and saving of wire.
- Inspection time is reduced because PCBs eliminates the probability of error.
Are PCB board amps better than hand wiring amps?
PCB board amps are really consistent since most of the construction is exactly the same. Hand wiring is ONLY superior if it is done correctly. Poor layouts and direct copying of old amps happen a lot in this business and this often makes hand wired amps noisier. At Carl’s Custom Amps we do it right.
Why are handwired amps so expensive?
But hand-wired amps are also more expensive to make, considering the high level of skill to hand wire an amp correctly and the amount of labor. “It takes eight times as long to wire a board by hand than it does with a printed circuit board,” said Fender Amplifiers Product Development Manager Rick Heins.
What’s the difference between a PCB AMP and a PTP AMP?
Very basically, PCB amps are more tonally consistent amp to amp because the “wiring” is essentially glued in place on the circuit board. PTP/hand wired amps can vary greatly amp to amp just due to the relative position of the wiring itself…so two PTP amps can have identical circuits and one can be a dog while the other can be a gem.
What is the difference between a printed circuit board and AMP?
The components are then soldered to pads at the ends of the tracks. Manufacturing amps this way is more consistent, efficient and cost-effective, as the process can be automated. On the other hand, printed circuit boards are more difficult to modify or service should an electrical component fail.
