What is the foveal?

What is the foveal?

The fovea centralis, or fovea, is a small depression within the neurosensory retina where visual acuity is the highest. The fovea itself is the central portion of the macula, which is responsible for central vision.[1][2][3][4]

What causes macular hemorrhage?

Submacular hemorrhage frequently results from a choroidal neovascular membrane secondary to age-related macular degeneration. Other conditions associated with CNVM, including myopia, trauma, ocular histoplasmosis and angioid streaks, can also lead to submacular hemorrhage.

What is the treatment for macular hemorrhage?

A second treatment option is pneumatic displacement of macular hemorrhage with or without pretreatment with intravitreal TPA. In one recent study, 5 patients with subretinal hemorrhage (1 from a retinal artery macroaneurysm and 4 from AMD) were treated with pneumatic displacement of blood without the use of TPA.

What is foveal blindness?

Over time, the fovea becomes surrounded by a growing band of blindness, first appearing as individual spots, then coalescing to resemble a doughnut with a very small hole in the middle. This is the final bunch of cells to atrophy, usually long after the surrounding tissue has done so.

What is extra foveal?

extrafoveal (not comparable) Outside the fovea.

How long does it take for a macular hemorrhage to heal?

Most vitreous hemorrhages resolve within three months, and fine traces of blood clot can still be seen settled inferiorly.

How does foveal hypoplasia affect vision?

The foveal portion of the retina does not develop normally in this disorder. It may be underdeveloped as the name implies but at any rate does not function normally. Since this area has the highest visual resolution, its malfunction results in the lack of sharp vision, often in the range of 20/50.

What causes loss of foveal contour?

The fovea is the site of pathology in many retinal diseases. Some of the mechanisms of disease can be mechanical. The vitreoretinal interface at the fovea can prove to be abnormal. This relationship can lead to anteroposterior traction, causing blunting of the foveal contour and subsequent visual distortion.
