For Brooklyn-based designer Barbaros Yasar, craftsmanship reigns supreme for his artisanal jewelry brand, Bora. While he jets between his native home of Turkey and back to his studio in the U.S., Yasar’s lengthy trek doesn’t seem to be slowing down his creative process.
What is Bora jewelry?
Bora Jewelry of Brooklyn began with three brothers’ vision in a small, makeshift New York studio. Today the Bora collection showcases a variety of handcrafted rings, pendants, earrings and cuffs. The designs have their roots in centuries old tradition.
Is handcrafted jewelry real?
No Mass Production Machinery Involved By definition, handmade jewelry is literally just that, made by the “hands” of the artisan or maker. The pieces are soldered, sawed, carved, and shaped without the use of manufacturing machinery.
Where are bora rings found?
Bora Rings were distributed widely throughout most of New South Wales and southern Queensland. In South-East Queensland alone there were 120 known Bora Rings.
Who is Bora Yasar?
Bora Yasar was born in 1973 in Gaziantep, Turkey. He studied Alevi music and played saz for a semah group. He studied and applied classical Turkish music maqam and sufi music on the fretless classic guitar with neyzen Sezgin Bademli (University of Gaziantep Conservatory).
Is handmade jewellery more expensive?

What does a Bora Ring look like?
A bora ring is a circle or oval shape with a raised embankment. Bora grounds typically have two rings, one small and one large, but some have three rings. The rings are connected by a pathway, where a male would be led from the larger ring to the smaller ring to transition from boyhood to manhood.
Are Bora rings still in use?
It is estimated that of the 426 Bora Rings which are known to have originally existed only 94 still survive. The spread of farming and urbanisation coupled with a disrespect for Indigenous values have been responsible for the demise of these cultural sites.
