Why is it called a Boilermaker?
It’s believed the drink takes its name from the workers who built and maintained steam locomotives in the 1800s. These workers were known to head to the bar at the end of the shift, and a shot of whiskey with a beer became a staple for quickly easing the pain that came from a hard day of back-breaking labor.
Is the Boilermaker 2021 Cancelled?
With the exception of 2020, when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boilermaker has been held every year since 1978. Traditionally the Boilermaker is held on the second Sunday in July, although the 2021 Boilermaker is scheduled for October 10th due to COVID-related concerns.

Distance & Course: The course is 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) USATF recertified in 2012. The course is marked in kilometers and miles with over twenty official water and aid stations.
Why is Purdue called the Boilermakers?
Purdue became known as the Boilermakers the next year. Several of the local schools added to the boilermaker tradition by suggesting that Purdue was going up the Wabash River and hiring workers from the nearby Monon railroad yards to play football. Purdue’s official mascot is a locomotive, the Boilermaker Special.

In total, 7,290 runners registered for the Boilermaker this year. Of those 7,290, 5,289 are participating in the in-person 15K run, 1,533 are running the in-person 5K, six are in the 15K wheelchair race. There are 369 running the 15K virtually and 93 are running the virtual 5K.
Is a boilermaker strong?
Whatever the origins of its name, a Boilermaker is a strong drink that gets a party off to a good start, but can get the best of you before you know it if you’re not careful. Come to think of it, that’s like a lot of the Boilermakers I know.

A rough guide for a 15km run would be to start on an interval session of 20 minutes and build this up to 30 minutes, with interval sessions such as 6 x 1 minute and 5 x 2 minutes, at a pace around 10-15 seconds faster than your long slower runs.

What are the requirements to participate in the 2022 boilermaker?
As of 2/1/22, in order to participate in the July 2022 Boilermaker, all participants must be able to provide at the point of packet pick-up, proof of either vaccination or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of the events as well as photo ID. The course is 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) USATF recertified in 2012.
What are the rules and regulations at the Boilermaker?
Walkers, dogs, skateboards, in-line skates, roller skates, bicycles, and baby joggers/strollers are prohibited. We strongly discourage the use of headphones. The 2022 Boilermaker will be the host of the 25th PRRO Circuit Championship.
