Why am I getting diesel fuel in my coolant?
The fuel pressure from the injector rail cast into the head (small hole to the left of the arrow) is far greater than the pressure in the cooling system. When a crack occurs, diesel fuel easily passes into the coolant.
Why does my antifreeze smell like diesel?
Registered. You have a problem in one of the cyl heads, either a crack in the head or an injector cup that has broken loose and not sealing. Usually you can find it by pulling all the injectors and pressure testing the cooling system and inspect the injector cups to see where the coolant is coming from.
Is diesel in coolant bad?
Your problem is not as harmful as filling the engine with hydraulic oil or, even worse, filling a diesel tractor with gasoline or antifreeze. The opportunities are endless (see photo). Since it is a good idea to drain and change the coolant every two years anyway, a coolant change won’t be out of line this time.
What are injector cups?
Injector cups are a very vital part of the internal workings of a Powerstroke diesel engine, whether it is a 6.0L or a 7.3L. The injector cup seals the cooling system from the injector inside the cylinder head. When the injector cup fails, you will no longer have a seal between the fuel system and the coolant system.
Does burning coolant smell like gas?
Burning coolant smells sweet. Also check your coolant level and see if it needs top up, could be a leak around the water pump housing or the filler neck. It smells sweet, as was stated above, and you usually can see a light white smoke if your coolant is burning.
How often should diesel coolant be changed?
every 2 years
The coolant in diesel engines needs to be replaced every 2 years (or 30,000 miles), while the coolant in gas engines needs to be replaced only every five years.
Can injector cups leak coolant?
That shows me exactly what I’m looking at as far as what’s going on down there. And, yeah, it is possible to leak into the cooling system through the cup, but it would have to be really, really bad.
